With the creation of a Black-led, arts-centric, interactive presentation, Earthseed seeks to equip educators and students with a program that will evolve students’ understanding of the political, historical, and artistic contributions of African Americans—not just by looking at the past, but also into the vibrant present and future. Using different forms of storytelling, contemporary Black New Mexican artists will showcase many lesser-known stories of the Black experience. "Where are the Black superheroes?" That question, posed back in 1993, led to a revolution: the creation of Milestone Media. In 1993, Denys Cowan, Dwayne McDuffie, Derek Dingle, and Michael Davis had an idea: a Black-owned comic book company, in partnership with DC, that would introduce the world to a new universe of the most diverse heroes the world had ever seen. That idea changed everything. Characters like Static, Icon, Rocket, Hardware, and Blood Syndicate allowed fans to see themselves represented in comics like never before, in stories that were incisive, pulse-pounding, and ahead of their time. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing from there. DC, Milestone, and Ally are on a mission to revolutionize the comics industry. That’s why they teamed up to create The Milestone Initiative: a groundbreaking program to empower Black and diverse creators with the tools to become the next generation of superhero storytellers. In May, at the Milestone Initiative Summit at DC headquarters, the first class of these emerging stars came together for a one week mentorship program, where legends like Jim Lee, Marie Javins, Denys Cowan, Reggie Hudlin, and Chris Conroy, along with experts from Ally, helped them hone the creative and business skills they’ll need to make it in the comic book industry– one of the most competitive fields in the world. For many of the Milestone Initiative participants, it was the first time they’d ever been given a shot. And the results were nothing short of life changing. A new age of heroes is dawning.
